ABOVE: One of my all time favorite pictures. The meadow and outlet stream below Portal Lake. The peak is only a ridge of Finger Peak, but impressive in this alpine setting. A beautiful spot to camp and visit.

When the trail finally does level out, you are rewarded for all your sweat and hard work by entering an outstandingly beautiful area with a large meadow and outlet stream of Portal Lake with an unnamed peak towering above the white granite Portal Lake bench. There is ample camping on a small moraine above the trail and among the trees across the stream. The Crown Basin Trail near Portal Lake is only marked by a sign in a tree and some hard to find ducks. There is no visible trail in that area going to Crown Basin.
